Searches can be made in the index under either the groom’s or bride’s surname. The online index contains over 75,000 marriages at present.
How the index started
As a family historian since the 1960s, this index grew out of the frustration of searching the same registers for different marriages and was inspired by the Sussex Marriage Index run by the late Frank Leeson and run on similar lines. Starting in 1971, the marriages were taken in the first instance from the Phillimore volumes of transcripts published in the early nineteenth century, this was followed by transcribing the marriages from the parish registers and Bishop’s Transcripts.
About Us
This index has been compiled by Sue Brown, who has been a family historian since the 1960s. Her family originates from the East Midlands, London, the Home Counties, Ulster and Flanders.
